All my new paintings have been Florida related, and most of them are in my sketchbook or in little accordion books. They’re such fun to do and such a great way to remember my time here. I’ll show you a few of them, but they are not going to be available as prints on my website. (I seemed to be fascinated with food this winter!)

I’ve been working on new designs for my 2021 Sanibel Island classes.  It’s easier to do it while I’m in a Florida state of mind than now when I’m knee deep in March snow in Michigan, but I do have the sketches finished for a sea turtle and a sea horse.

My Watercolor and Writing Retreat on August 18-20, 2020 is in the planning stages—more details later, but right now the plan is to include some favorite events from the 2019 retreat plus some brand new writing prompts and painting exercises to challenge and entertain you. Location: the beautiful Kettunen Center in Tustin, Michigan. Cost: $595. General registration will be opening in April, so please let me know if you’re already interested by sending me an email, Facebook message, or calling me on my cell phone. Contact information is at the top of this newsletter.

I’ve been asked to illustrate a book called “Twelve Gifts from the Garden,” by Charlene Costanzo. Each tiny black and white illustration will be just enough to head up each chapter at the top of the page.

By popular demand, I’m designing a tee shirt: high quality, pre-shrunk cotton with geraniums in a row across the front. Here is the tentative design I’m working on.

HOME STUDIO (Between Mackinaw City and Cheboygan, Michigan)

On the five Thursdays of April 2020 from 1-4 p.m. I will hold watercolor classes at my home studio. I welcome all painters, beginners thru advanced, for instruction. Cost is $175, bring your own supplies. Class usually begins with an instructional demonstration then we branch out into a painting of your choice with individual assistance. Please register with me at (231) 818-6365.

My Sanibel Island classes were very successful this season, and I’ve been invited back to teach at BIG Arts next year. Classes will be scheduled soon and I already have a two-day WATERCOLOR GARDEN JOURNALING class set for January 19 and 20, 2021 from 10-4 each day at Sanibel Moorings botanical garden.  Registration will begin around mid-August through BIG Arts, but if you’re already interested, please let me know and I will save your space. Registration will be limited to seven and we had a full class this year. Cost has not been set yet, but I’m guessing it will be about $179 member/ $224 non-member, same as this year.

I will be teaching two different INTRODUCTION TO WATERCOLOR PAINTING classes. These two-hour classes are designed to give you an idea of what watercolor is all about.  All supplies will be provided, and you will leave class with a painting of a sea horse or a sea turtle, depending on which class you choose.

WATERCOLOR PAINTING FOR ALL LEVELS is a class where students paint their own choice of subject with demonstrations and one-on-one guidance from me.

Watch for details, dates, and registration information in upcoming newsletters.

LAVENDER HILL FARM (Boyne City, Michigan)

It’s like painting in the hills of Provence right here in northern Michigan! Two classes are planned already for Lavender Hill Farm: June 30 and July 30, 1-3 each day. During both classes we will be painting lavender, suitable for matting and framing in an 8x10 format. June 30 will be a lavender plant in a terra cotta pot. On July 30 we’ll be painting a lavender bundle, and you may position it either vertically or horizontally. On both the lavender pot and the lavender bundle you’ll have the option of adding a touch of whimsy to your painting—a purple bow made from real ribbon. Cost is $49 for each of these classes and you may call me for more information and to register: (231) 818-6365. These classes fill quickly so don’t wait—my first registrant called on a very blustery December day after seeing my lavender painting on Facebook!

Once again I will be teaching for the Mackinac Arts Council at the Manoogian Art Museum on beautiful Mackinac Island.  Classes for students of all skill levels will be held from 6-8 p.m. All materials will be provided and you will leave class with a painting suitable for 8x10 framing. Dates for this summer’s classes are June 15,  July 20, and August 10. Registration will open online sometime in April for these classes.

I’ve been invited to teach more classes at the Watercolor Café, a wonderful island venue, this summer. Classes will be scheduled soon. Keep watching for details in my next newsletter or on my Facebook page, Watercolor Paintings by Mary Lou Peters. Website for the Watercolor Café is .

On August 5, 2020 I’ll be teaching a class at the Tawas Bay Art Gallery in my hometown. I always look forward to visiting the town where I grew up and seeing it through new eyes—as a tourist! This summer we will be painting a lighthouse that’s dear to my heart—the Tawas Point Lighthouse. All materials will be provided and you will finish a painting suitable for matting and framing in an 8x10 format. Cost is $49 and you may register at the gallery (301 Newman St., East Tawas MI 48730) or call them at (989) 362-5613. You may call me for more information about this class: (231) 818-6365.

My books make great gifts for any occasion. Mothers Day is coming up—treat your mom, sister, friend, or that special woman in your life to one of my illustrated books. When you order from my website, let me know if there is a special inscription you’d like in your book and I’ll be glad to write it.

Come join the fun as I post a painting on Facebook nearly every day. I love interacting with my followers—if you are already a follower, thank you! If you’d like to become one, go to my FB business page, Watercolor Paintings by Mary Lou Peters.

Spotted on a poster: “Make precious time in your day to recharge your soul.”  (James VanPraagh, spiritual teacher)

This is what I’ve done during my two-month working vacation in Florida, and I feel completely recharged and ready to plan for the busy summer season ahead.
