We flew to Beijing from Chicago on October 7, 2005. Our flight took us over the Arctic Circle, Siberia and Outer Mongolia. Highlights in Beijing included a rickshaw ride and lunch in a hutong neighborhood, Peking Opera, the Great Wall, Ming Tombs and tours of jade, cloisonné and pearl factories.

We flew to Xi'an and spent two days exploring the Terra Cotta Warrior Museum and Shaanxi Provincial Museum. We enjoyed dinner at a special dumpling restaurant. Our walk home from the restaurant was beautiful with the city's stone wall and gates lit at night with red lanterns.
A five hour train ride through the countryside took us to Luoyang in Central China. Early in the morning we walked to a park where hundreds of Chinese perform tai chi, dance and play sports like badminten and hacky sack. We also visted Longman Grotto and beautiful White Horse Temple.
In Kaifeng we enjoyed the chrysathemum festival at Dragon Pavillion, climbed to the top of the Iron Pagota and experienced the exciting atmosphere of the night market.
We flew to Hangzhou where many Chinese vacation along West Lake. We cruised the lake, visited the Avalokitesvera and ate an "American Pizza" at a Pizza Hut just for fun. Brita and Peter ventured into Chinese traffic on bikes. We also received a real Chinese traditional medicine treatment at an apothecary shop.
Our train arrived at night in the "Blade Runner" atmosphere of Shanghai. We spent a day by the Bund and Pudong and enjoyed dessert after dark at the top of one of the city's new skyscrapers. The morning we left we had a thrilling 451 km/hr. ride to the Shanghai airport on the new Maglev train. We flew to Chicago on October 21.
